Doug Waples, founder of Sirius, has worked in geochemistry and basin modeling in the petroleum-exploration industry since 1971. With a PhD in chemistry from Stanford University, he has developed or helped develop much of the current scientific technology, including 1D, 2D, and 3D. He has also taught university and short courses since 1984. He has led modeling studies all over the world for many different clients over more than 30 years. His publications include three books, more than 100 papers and abstracts, and three videos.

We specialize in basin-modeling studies, creative applications of source-rock kinetics, development of innovative software and technologies to solve problems in basin modeling and petroleum geochemistry, and training through short courses and mentoring. Sirius invented Integrated Geohistory Analysis (IGA), a new approach to basin analysis that takes advantage of the capabilities of our Novva software.

Sirius Exploration Geochemistry was incorporated in 2013 as the natural evolution of Douglas Waples’s 30+ year history as a consultant in petroleum geochemistry and basin modeling. Dr. Waples continues as the principal scientist in Sirius, but Sirius also includes a number of associates and partners who work with Dr. Waples on specific projects. Sirius provides normal exploration consulting services in geochemical interpretation, Integrated Geohistory Analysis (IGA), and basin modeling; work for government entities seeking to understand or better promote their own acreage; development of exploration-oriented software such as Novva and ORFA; in-house training and public courses; research projects in collaboration with clients; and multiclient speculative studies in both geochemistry and basin modeling in domestic US and foreign basins. Our Partners
We collaborate frequently with Newman Energy Research Ltd (NERL), who are the sole provider of VIRF, a petrographic method that augments standard VR with quantitative fluorescence to provide exceptionally precise and reliable maturity data. The unique VIRF package also uses mineralogy and microstructure to identify magmatic and hydrothermal controls on thermal history, thus providing a multidisciplinary approach that is particularly valuable in many geological scenarios. Sirius and Stratos share a deep common interest in developing and applying the principles of Integrated Geohistory Analysis to understanding basin evolution, particularly in SE Asia, where the standard eustasy-based approach shows important limitations. Stratos has unrivalled insights into the stratigraphy and petroleum systems of SE Asia. We collaborate on exploration projects and training, and often combine the two. We partner with StratoChem Services who provide most of the geochemical analyses we require. StratoChem pays all costs of shipping samples to their Cairo lab via their prepaid account with DHL. Sample transport and delivery are thus simple, fast, and free to the client. Turnaround times for data are normally very short, and prices are extremely favorable. However, if our clients want to use a different laboratory, we are happy to accommodate that preference.
We also collaborate with StratoChem Services on 3D modeling studies, where they build and execute 3D migration models using the Trinity® software, based on our 1D models created using our Novva software.
